'Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house
The children were screaming and so was the spouse.
The suitcase was packed by the door with care
In hopes that the next child would soon be there.
Barbara was reading all snug at her desk,
While Charlotte was painting--just making a mess!
Delores was playing with her doll and Dennis with his train
While Gary and Mickey were stopping up the bathroom drain.
When out in the yard there rose such a clatter,
We all rushed to the door to see what was the matter.
Away to the window Gary and Mickey flew like a flash,
And Dennis, behind them, knocked over the trash!
Barbara and Charlotte were soon to follow
While Delores just stood there and took a big swallow.
When, what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But our very own car stuck in fifth gear;
With a little old driver who seemed to be glad,
We knew in a moment it must be our Dad!
More rapid than eagles he roared through the drive
Calling out to his children who totaled one plus five,
"Come Barbara! Come Charlotte! Come Mickey and Gary!
Come Dennis, Delores, and don't you tarry!
To the front of the house, line up every louse!
While I go in and fetch my spouse!"
And then, in a twinkling, we saw Mother at the door
And we knew we would be six siblings no more"
The thought of a new baby had us all hopin'
That at Christmas the hospital would be open!
To the hospital! To the hospital Jimmie rush!
And please children "Can you all please hush?"
Her eyes -- how they twinkled! Her dimples how merry!
Her cheeks were like roses, Her nose like a cherry!
Her droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And her wrinkled skin felt just like dough!
She was chubby and plump, a right jolly little elf,
And we laughed when we saw her, in spite of ourselves;
A look in her eyes and a twist of her head,
Soon gave us to know we had nothing to dread;
She spoke not a word but went straight to sleep
We knew then that she was our sister for keeps!
'Twas the day after Christmas in 1954
